Message from the Chair:

Greetings, RSS Members!

It was nice to see some of you who traveled to Atlanta for the Midwinter Meeting. The section hosted a pancake breakfast meetup – we had a great time! The RUSA Social was also a busy event and it was so nice to see so many people from all of the RUSA sections. I look forward to meeting more of you at ALA Annual in Chicago.

On the administrative side, RSS has been paying close attention to the proposed RUSA reorganization. There may be some changes to the structure of RUSA committees, and should that happen, RSS will work to plan representation for the section, and look at our structure to assure that we’re able to pass information from the division to the section.

As we move towards spring, please keep in mind Rebecca Jackson, Vice-Chair of RSS. She will be filling spots on RSS Committees. If you’re interested in serving on a RSS committee, please complete the online RUSA Volunteer form. Feel free to contact Rebecca with any questions about committees or the process at rjackson@iastate.edu.

Our committees have been busy planning events for ALA annual and webinars for this spring. Please read more about their work in the committee reports section – they’re doing great work!

I look forward to sharing a list of events RSS has planned for Annual as we get closer to June. You can also find information about the section on our Facebook page
(https://www.facebook.com/rss.rusa).

RSS Honor Roll

It’s that time of year! We want to recognize you and your contributions to RSS!

The RSS Honor Roll gives recognition to active RSS members who have served the section in three different capacities since its inception.

If you have been a member of three or more committees or discussion groups since RSS was established in 2004 and have not previously been added to the honor roll, please send your name and a list of the three ways you have served RSS to Ellen Keith at keith@chicagohistory.org.

Not only will you become a member of this esteemed group, you will also be recognized at ALA Annual in Chicago!

RSS Committee Reports

Communications Committee

The Communication Committee will hold its Midwinter meeting virtually on February 22, 2017. Since our meeting in the fall, committee members have been contacting RSS committee chairs to discuss updating committee web pages. Giving all committee chairs administrative rights on the Facebook page, which we had hoped to do, turned out not to be feasible, so two Communication Committee members have made a plan for scheduled weekly posts on the RSS Facebook page. RSS committees interested in having something posted about their current activities may contact Denise Wetzel at dwetzel@library.msstate.edu or Manda Sexton at asexto14@utk.edu.
Drafting an “elevator speech,” about RSS is in process; it will be distributed to the Executive Committee for vetting when we have a draft. We have also been working with the ETS Membership and Communication committee to sponsor a social at ALA Annual Conference in Chicago.

Research and Statistics Committee

The Research and Statistics Committee recently received 20 proposals for presentation at their program for ALA Annual in Chicago, New Discoveries in Reference: The 23rd Annual Reference Research Forum. Using a blind reviewing process, the committee has selected the top 3 proposals and is in the process of working out the details for this program. Stay tuned for more information!
