Letter from the Chair:
Hello, fellow STARS!
This fall is moving right along, and our fantastic membership has been busy, busy, busy. Hopefully many of you and your colleagues were able to participate in the recent webinar “Demystifying Resource Sharing: ILL Basics for Non-Resource Sharing Staff and Librarians.” This was organized by last year’s Education & Training Committee and taught by fellow STARS
Ryan Litsey, Jessica Bower (STARS Chair-elect 2019-20), and Jalesia Horton. It is through valuable programs such as this that members can showcase their expertise, contribute to the profession, and help develop future generations of access services and resource sharing professionals. If you have any ideas for webinars, don’t hesitate to reach out to one of our amazing committee chairs to help get the ball rolling!
Many of you are probably aware that, back in August, the RUSA Board elected to approve the Model ILL License Clause proposed by the Legislation & Licensing Committee. Congratulations Legislation & Licensing…this was a long process and we are happy to see the Clause finally approved and added to the RUSA Guidelines. More information about the Model ILL License Clause can be found at https://rusaupdate.org/2019/08/approval-of-rusa-stars-legislation-and-licensing-model-license-clause/.
Thanks, also, to the Nominating Committee who has rounded up a fantastic slate of candidates for the 2020 ballot. And speaking of the ballot, the Executive Committee is hoping (fingers crossed) to have an updated version of STARS Bylaws available for vote in 2020. Keep your eyes peeled for more information in the coming weeks. Also, in the year ahead look for a new STARS Checklist coming from the Rethinking Resource Sharing Committee, online Discussion Group forums, new and creative outreach and promotional material, and the most-likely-but-not-entirely-sure RETURN OF THE ILL 101 PRECONFERENCE WORKSHOP. Whoop! (Thanks to Megan Gaffney who valiantly led this effort…again, more to come so stay tuned!)
Midwinter in Philadelphia will be here before we know it. While ALA is busy finalizing the scheduler, pencil the following signature STARS events into your calendars (locations TBD):
- RUSA STARS All Committee Meeting on Saturday, January 25, 8:30 am – 10:30 am
- ILL Discussion Group on Saturday, January 25, 10:30 am – Noon
- RUSA STARS Executive Committee Meeting, Monday, January 27, 8:30 am – 11:30 am
I hope you all enjoy what’s left of fall, and to see many of you in Philadelphia!
All the best,
David Ketchum
Chair, RUSA STARS 2019-2020

Research and Assessment Committee
The RUSA STARS Research & Assessment Committee has been attempting to gain traction on completing our recommendations related to whether the community would want to have beset practices, guidelines, or even a Code for resource sharing report definitions. The most important step we need to do to complete this action is to survey the community on this basic question. Our goal continues to be to gather input before the holiday break so STARS Exec can review in January. We have been challenged with folks having limited time. We’ll push through and do this. It would be great if everyone can be ready to help share our link and submit their own ideas to make this the best-informed recommendations.

International ILL Committee
Results of the RUSA STARS International Interlibrary Loan Committee’s 2019 survey were presented at the 16th IFLA Interlending & Document Supply Conference in Prague, Czech Republic on October 10, 2019. The paper “International Interlibrary Loan in a Changing Environment: Results from the 2019 RUSA STARS International ILL Survey” was published as part of the Open Access Conference Proceedings (http://www.nusl.cz/ntk/nusl-403555), and a recording of the presentation is available on YouTube (https://youtu.be/ievyjUEsgho).

Outreach and Promotion Committee
The RUSA STARS Outreach and Promotion Committee met September 19, 2019 and October 24, 2019. The Committee has been promoting the O&P tried to promote the Demystifying ILL webinar, with a push in the last week. This appeared to result in an increase in registration (5 individuals and 2 groups registered in the week before the webinar).
The committee received a charge from the Chair to develop a plan for promoting STARS at conferences/supporting speakers who want to discuss STARS, including developing materials for this use. The timeline for this is to be ready for the next term.
Ongoing projects include Winter STARGazer & a O&P Documention project.
