Message from RUSA

From the RUSA President - Courtney McDonald

Greetings, all,

I hope that you and your families are well and safe. Even amidst this year's continued uncertainties, I have some encouraging news to share about the future of RUSA. At our August 11 RUSA Virtual Town Hall, ( & ), the explained key elements of our division budget and shared their recommendations based on our financial standing at that time. In early October, ALA Executive Board passed a motion to roll over remaining ASGCLA general fund balances to RUSA at the end of this ALA fiscal year (August 31, 2021). We are extremely grateful to the ALA Executive Board, ALA Executive Director Tracie D. Hall, ASGCLA Executive Director Jeannette Smithee, and ASGCLA Board members for their support of RUSA. That said, it is critical that we all realize these funds do not enable us to continue with 'business as usual' but instead are a means by which our runway to evolve to a sustainable future has lengthened. At yesterday's RUSA Board meeting, the ALA Futures Task Force submitted and the RUSA Board held the first of what is sure to be many discussions about a sustainable future for RUSA, shaped by our strategic plan and honoring key elements of our legacy. Inspired by the ALA Pivot Strategy (), RUSA leadership will be working together to develop a RUSA Pivot Strategy. We look forward to sharing more with you on this topic in the coming months.

Thanks to all of you who participated in our recent survey regarding topics of interest for future RUSA Virtual Town Hall programming. We heard you! In the new year, we'll be presenting a session on Services in the Time of COVID-19 which will spotlight all six sections as well as a session introducing you to our newest colleagues who've recently joined us from ASGCLA. Dates and times will be forthcoming soon. Before that, in early December the Definition of Reference Task Force will hold a Town Hall with some exciting updates. Stay tuned!

As always, I invite each of you to contact me directly () with your ideas, concerns, or suggestions regarding how RUSA can support you and your work.

Take care,
